Thomson Majesty disaster.
I've stuck this in Tenerife news even though it happened in La Palma. Safety exercise goes tragically wrong...BBC News

Re: Thomson Majesty disaster.
lot of weight in those life boats, 2 winches to operate at the same time, Imagine it full of people too, I watched a programe on the Concordia that ran aground, they was lowering the lifeboats and it was getting hung up because it was listing, Think about it, one side is away from the boat and the other side is pretty useless, Also who gave the order to abandon ship ?, not going to sink was it if its ran aground, I think i would make my own arrangements in a situation like that, Same go's on a plane - They tell you to brace by putting your head between your legs ? How ?
Punch the stewerdess and open the door and get out pronto,

Re: Thomson Majesty disaster.
Things have changed you used to have to do a full 4 weeks course on lifeboatmanship when I was in the Navy. Merchant you got city and guilds and Royal it was in your training files. This would cover all aspects from life saving to righting the life rafts as they sometimes inflate tits up. The use of Davits ot winches as numpty calls them was a major part of this. Sure they di on site training now. We had to row 3 miles and coxswain a boat for ours.

Re: Thomson Majesty disaster.
Travelling is dangerous, full stop, whether by air, land or sea. You are just as likely to get run over by a deranged motorist at 9.30am on a Friday morning in a Leeds Morrisons car park. Surprised it even made the news. No fecker cares about them, all foreigners on about 60p an hour if they are lucky, just so you and me can cruise round the Canaries for a week for 300 quid or sometimes even less.......Next.

Re: Thomson Majesty disaster.
In 70's and early 80's UK had one of the biggest Royal fleets in the world and I believe the second biggest Merchant fleet. Royal navy started using Philippino crew on RFA ships(always used Chinese laundry men). Merchant started using same(RFA are merchant crewed), then various others. We then started registering in places like Panama because a lot cheaper than UK registration, our downfall.

Said boat registered in Malta, say no more. Is Air Malta still going? Flown with them more than once, out of Gatwick probably.

Re: Thomson Majesty disaster.
Bit like Ryanair staff, most of them are very foreign. But the best are the laid back Dutch pilots.....

Re: Thomson Majesty disaster.
We were on the Majesty's sister ship the Dream at Christmas. We watched from our window whilst they checked the lifeboats. We saw one chap stand on the side of the boat as it hung over the side of the ship, he shimmied up the cable to bang on the wheel at the top with a hammer. All he was wearing was an overall suit. No hard hat, no safety boots just trainers. We both said where's the safety officer.

Re: Thomson Majesty disaster.
They should not sail if lifeboats are jamming. You actually can put them out of action as you have more then enough on most ships, but they must be masked up as such and a new muster list done. If this is not done and there is an abandon ship, the people for that boat will be in panic.

Re: Thomson Majesty disaster.
The Thomson Majesty is still being kept in La Palma...Canarian Weekly
Correction: This from Janet Anscombe...
" Update 15 February: The ‘Thomson Majesty’ arrived back
in Tenerife this morning, ready to start a week’s cruise with some 1,100
passengers to Gran Canaria, La Palma, Madeira, Marruecosa and
Lanzarote. Passengers on the cruise where tragedy struck in La Palma
were returned to their home countries on flights organized by the tour
company. The investigation into the accident which cost the lives of
five crew remains open."
