I would go into the Control Panel and uninstall anything that says Norton from your programmes list. I would then just download AVG and it sorts its own settings out.

I downloaded AVG last night, have not got rid of Norton as yet cos thought once I stop paying for it in a couple of weeks time it would disappear....

It wont disappear. It will continue to work but wont update itself for any new threats. Running the 2 of them together isn't a good idea. It may cause conflicts on your machine. You should be able to uninstall Whichever one you want via the control panel ("Add/remove programs" or "Uninstall a Program")
