Two views in Manchester about it:-
1. They made an arse of it as half of the eyesore is still there...
2. It gave all the unemployed Irish builders living in Manchester some work...
Know a girl who worked in a shop there, says they got the warning to evacuate, but the shop management made them cash up etc, as normal pre locking up the shop, they were just in the process of leaving the building when the bomb went off, unhurt but a very freighting experience for her...
Manchester now holds a very big St Patrick's day parade, couple of years back me and my mate are out on the town having a bit of a late one, it's about three in the morning so we're well oiled,,, get speaking to four big rough as fu#k looking Irish guys at the bar, mate says to them what you doing in Manchester, reply, were over for the St Patrick's day parade, mate who's a mancunian pipes up,,, "Fu#king brilliant innit, you bomb the shit out of our city centre and in return we give you a feckin parade",,, Oops time to leave...

Re: On this day in History...
I'm kinda sick of the fact that "British" ( not all by any means) people seems to hold the ordinary Irish in distaste, as if we were somehow colluding with the IRA. British people, English in particular and the more southern ones at that , seem to me anyway, to be pretty reserved when meeting an Irish person. Once they get to know them its fine, its just that initial "familiarisation" The younger generation don't give a shit. If they think you're a wanker, its nothing to do with nationality, its the plain fact, you are an arse, end of. All my friends here, English included, all want a united Ireland ( if in fact they give a shit about it at all) but every one of them, down to their toes, were as appalled as anyone else at what went on. Incidentally, the IRA never recognised the republic and claimed that they were the only legitimate army on the island. That being the case, all these "attacks" were carried out in my name. I don't feckin' think so!!! Anyway, I hope these attitudes are changing. If they don't , it will bleed into the next generation and thats no good. We're not all AK47 carrying, bomb planting, leprauchan's that eat nothing but potatoes ( don't like potato jokes either, shows an ignorance/contempt of what happened during the famine here). I remember Reg saying a while back something about these bombers ( from both sides) walking around freely. I said something like, "it was the price of peace I suppose". Maybe its a heavy price, but whats the alternative??

Re: On this day in History...
There was a programme here on about Waterloo and the Duke of Wellington yesterday. I never knew he was Irish or that the 3 main battalions ( in the centre of Wellington's lines) were Irish ( in fact 1/3 of all the soldiers were Irish). He ( Wellington) was reputed to have denounced his Irishness and supposedly said " just because you are born in a stable, doesn't make you a horse". He in fact never said this, it was actually a political opponent who said it, but was so good a sound byte , it stuck. Very educational this forum!

Re: On this day in History...
I watched a documentary about it on Tuesday, it was the Scottish regiments point of view. They lost a lot of men...they were in that Hougomont farm as well as forming the "squares" against the French heavy cavalry.

Re: On this day in History...
Come to think of it, what a bunch of tightwads! The defining moment in the Napoleonic wars and what do they do? Rename Strand Bridge as Waterloo Bridge! I can imagine the council heads in London..."Will it cost much?" "No, just change the signs at either end". "Let's do it!"
