Re: 1916 Easter Rising
That's going to be a big thing here at Easter and rightly so. Athenry is currently doing a little garden in remembrance to a Galway participant in the rising. It will be ready in time for the celebrations. Pity Arlene Foster , current leader of the Unionists, couldn't see past her bigoted nose to attend one of the events. She would be the first one spouting her diatribe if Martin McGuinness didn't attend a welcome dinner for the Queen in the north . Interestingly, public opinion at the time was dead set against the rebellion. Victoria visited Dublin a few years before and nearly 1/2 million people turned out to cheer her. The manner is which the rebels fought against the overwhelming force of the British Empire earned the admiration of the public but still not their support. That only happened after the rebels were executed, one of which James Connolly ( an Edinburgh man ) was so weak from his wounds, they tied him to a chair in order to shoot him. This swung public opinion massively.
This is just my opinion, but without those executions, things might have turned out very differently.
1. Ireland would eventually have become independent anyway but if this were the case, I pretty much guarantee we would still be part of the Commonwealth or
2. ( less likely but still possible ) we would still be part of a United Kingdom, but each individual country, England included, would have had their own parliaments years ago.
There ends this morning's history lesson folks

One of the problems with UK coming out of Europe would be the land border in Ireland. Maybe we can all come out together and you can have some nice £s over there. After all, we are the only Countrys in Europe that speak the same language eh?

Thanks Dermot. Have you got any spare rocks over there to reinforce that Hadrians wall?
