Re: Galway
Thats old Irish. The gist of it is, "Tra na Paisti" is The Childrens Beach. Cradled by the Mary ( Mother of God I presume), something then about babies without name , who died in the Great Famine ( An Gorta Mor ) ( Gorta is actually an injury or hardship, but I don't think there is a direct translation for famine), erected by the people of the locality 1997. I suspect there is a mass grave there with the bodies of children who couldn't be traced in the 1840/50's, probably because their parents had already died, and the children were left to fend for themselves. These mass graves are more common than you might think. As far as I know they only know the locations of roughly one third of them.

Re: Galway
Just after realising the "Babies without name" were unbaptised and as such, couldn't be buried in consecrated ground. The few churches that were allowed to open couldn't keep up with funerals etc, never mind baptisms. So the babies that died at birth, would be buried somewhere outside of graveyards. More than likely, the ground was too rocky in the locality and the people were too weak from hunger to try to dig a grave. The easiest thing would have been to bury them on the beach. Sad really that such a beautiful beach probably has hundreds of children's bodies beneath it.The Lone Ranger wrote:Dermo, this was on that coral beach, any idea what it says?

Coincidentally, here is a piece about that place in Tuam I told you about. I thought it was 70 bodies, but it seems like 800 now!

Re: Galway
Prince Charles and Camilla were in Mullaghmore a couple of years back. Think he requested a few minutes on his own to reminisce cos I think he was quite close to Mountbatten. Was there any commemorative plaque or the like there?

Re: Galway
Yeah, extremists on both sides perpetrating acts that just prolonged the mayhem. British government had a lot to answer for as well but thankfully, both governments are singing off the same hymn sheet nowadays. Still a few nutters about, but the small support they had is dwindling away as the supporters die off. This island is a great place to visit, just wish it was a better place to live as well.

Re: Galway
Yes Dermo the British government had loads to answer for and some people do not like Bono and a few others that publicly spoke out but without the high end across the board intervention of actors, professional and bands like U2 pushing hard against all 3 sides where would be. Classic line " no Ira, no Udf , no British Army, we're not going back there

Re: Galway
UIn case people don't realise I am sure that Dermo is aware and Reg in the song Sunday Bloody Sunday Bono says " it takes a brave man to make a brave choice, especially when you make your signature tune a song about the horrible decisions from 3 armies causing many deaths in Omah and many other places, when you yourself have to live in fear as death threats from both Ira and Usf are given because you publicly condemn them, thanks to all those that shout for what is right and not just what some want to hear
