Should Forums Have a PM Facility.....

Only got in to these forum things a year or so back, basically still a bit of a “Lurker”, when I have tried to join in I have occasionally received PM’s (Personal Messages) from members who seem open to voicing their views on such forums but take it somehow personal when replied to...

My opinion is if you are prepared to throw something in to an open forum take what comes back...

Is it not a bit old maids tittle tattle when you can discuss behind the scene.

Personally I have only ever used the “PM” facility to apologise when whatever I have said has been misinterpreted (Except once where felt I may have been pushing a post a bit too far and asked advice “3rd/LR”).

So, my question is “Should Forums Have a PM Facility”

Yes forums should have a PM facility. There are times when you want to post a message to someone and not want it on a open forum in case it is either too personal or even to save going off topic..

It is a useful tool for mods to talk as well and others can be told if going out of the forum rules without an embarrassing open remark.
Great if some one wants your email or mobile number.

I hate it when people put on a forum I have sent you a PM. OK, if it is passing on something like an email address or phone number and they dont want the world to know but when it is information about a resort, restaurant, weather etc it really gets me, if it is worth passing on then share it with everyone. I am talking specifically Tripadviser here.

I also for the reasons stated think that a PM facility is useful but as far as tittle tattle goes, would say it is a No No. Unless you know someone well enough to have their private email address why should you be discussing others with them. It deserves to come back and bite you right on the bum because all you are doing is sneakily trying to cause trouble. If you don´t like what someone says tell them. If you just don´t like someone, ignore them... simples.

PM for apologies, email address, phone number, etc and perhaps to ask a particular member for advice on a subject you know they are knowledgable about, but don't necessarily want to include the whole forum on. With regards to gossip, backstabbing or tittle tattle, well if you don't have the balls to say it openly, you shouldn't have joined in the first place.

    Well said

Now can LR give me more space because my PM box is overflowing and I need to keep all the gossip somewhere, one day it will come in handy to do a hatchet job on various members 🤣 🤣
