I would disagree Searcher, I have never tasted such awful cooking as my mum's she could even ruin beans on toast. Yet I can cook as can both of my daughters (the eldest took a while to get there) but I think a lot of it is down to wanting to cook. My mother was more concerned about how she looked rather than feeding the family.

T.D. you say you totally disagree with what I said and then went on to say exactly what I had already said , yes lots of people make money who cannot cook but that cannot last and yes many great chefs who are superb cooks fail to make money ,that was the point I was making, Iwas speaking as a professional not as a dabbler, anyone can put ingredients together but to be a success it must be what people want and you must make enough money from it to give yourself a decent living and have the customer return

Searcher, what I am saying is I disagree with what you say concerning the fact of making money is the art and that anyone can cook. People make money from food because a lot of the public do not have taste buds, only art in that is, they are good at business. This would be same for any trade. They can't cook and have no passion for food so no art.

Not trying to annoy anyone Vince, just don'tagree and if Bill is talking from a professional point of view the comment anyone can cook, he will know is nonsense. You have many that go to College and still can't cook. I would say that probably half of all Chefs can't cook very well, they are just merely cooks.

My point is not everyone can cook which is what you stated, just because people go to college does no mean they can produce top quality nosh.
My Daughter can't cook, yet her Brother is a super chef, she has tried but just can't do it, many are like that. The statement "anyone can cook" is derogatory towards good cooks, in that I mean all that can cook well from home cooks to top chefs.
I could say anyone can fix a car, but how many have needed advice from Reg or Vince, just for basics.

When I said anyone can cook I was correct ,what I did not say was that anyone can cook well.
The point that I have been trying to put over is ,that to be a success in the catering trade you have to cook well enough for people to want to eat in your establishment and make it profitable enough to keep your head above water, one of my tutors told me many years ago that the only thing worse than selling food too dearly was selling it too cheaply

Totally agree with last bit of statement. Right price is very important, not just for profit but if you sell a full english at 2.99 people will go next door at 4.99 thinking it will be better quality, but not 2 doors at 8.99.
