Re: What are you doing today??
Today Matthew, we went to the Ancient fortress of Alt Cluid or as it is known nowadays, Dumbarton Rock!
Entrance to castle...
Looking up to Georgian sentry box and gun battery...
Here's the story behind "Freeze the balls off a brass monkey". See the cannon balls in the frame? The frame is called a monkey and was usually made of brass to stops sparks from igniting the gunpowder. In winter the brass would contract more than the iron cannon balls and force the balls off, hence the saying...good 'ere innit?
These were the latrines for the soldiers based on the Spur Battery...hole in the back, straight over the walls!
It was from here that Mary, Queen of Scots as a 6 year old left for France before she returned to Scotland 12 years later, eventually being captured by Elizabeth the first, her cousin, and ended up being beheaded. Women eh?
Looking up to the guard room which spanned the crevice between the two crags...
The rocks above the guard room look none too safe...
Looking from the back of the guardroom up to the Portcullis tower. This was the final obstruction before intruders gained the upper reaches of the rock...
Steps above the Portcullis gate leading to White Tower Crag...
Mermaid climbing them...lol! (Get up there girl!)
At the highest point on the rock...
The French Prison where high-ranking Napoleonic officers were held...
Duke of Argyll's gun Battery overlooking Dumbarton Football Club. (We know how to keep fans in order...)
Duke of Argyll's gun Battery...
...guarding the confluence of the River Leven (outflow from Loch Lomond) and River Clyde...
Mermaid on sentry duty...
Looking down to where my car was parked near castle entrance...
...all in all a good day out was had!
