Edinburgh trams to run at loss for 15 years

  

TRIDENT. Wasnt for profit, keeps us safe. The army dont make a profit either. Its for flexing our muscles in foreign places and to keep gobshites like me under control..........

Much like Edinburgh from today in Manchester you can now travel to the airport by tram,,, whoopee doo...

Tram from Piccadilly Station (City Centre) to the airport, one change, about twenty odd stops, costs £4.40 return, takes 45 minutes...

Train from Piccadilly Station (City Centre) to the airport, no changes, no stops, costs £4.20 return, takes 15 minutes...

Yip, trams deffo the future,,, that's why we got rid of them fifty or so years back.....

Should do something in Glasgow it is a fiasco.

Yip, gonna be flying from there end of December, it's a Sunday, first train in to Glasgow Central station is about one thirty pm, then a choice of either another train out to Paisley then a bus or taxi to the airport, I'm going for the coach link option from Glasgows Central station to the airport, being a Sunday and hopefully light traffic, I think (hope) it will be the best option...

Got a feeling it will be a long time (if ever) before Glasgow go for a tram system after the Edinburgh fiasco...

They put in a light rail in Dublin ( Luas ). Started about 15 years ago. It too was supposed to be a white elephant. It has fully paid for itself now and they are putting in a 4th line now ( still don't have one from the airport for some reason). They are also proposing to put it underground in the city centre (at 4 times the cost of if they had done it 15 years ago when the unions blocked it). In Dublin the lines run from  major population centres ( several along each line). Is it the same in Edinburgh or is it just taking airport travellers?

Money should be found to put a tube in any major city, I mean the population isnt getting any less for crying out loud

Find the funds, Put unemployed people down drains in the road with shovels and picks if you must, but get on with it

I more or less agree. If you are going to put in any kind of rail system, stick it underground. Theres going to come a time when it will have to go there anyway.

the whole idea of ´going to work ´´ is victorian ...i work all over the world and have customers from australia to finland . dont go more then the garden most days .

Only two stops near housing areas and even then very few houses actuall near the tram stops, total vanity project, where I live Manchester they are constantly expanding the tram network, but again stops are very far apart so the majority of people still use the bus, plus at times other than rush hour the busses are quicker...

i dont understand how buses are faster when they are on same roads as cars and TRAMS are on tracks where only they travel ??. the trams in SANTA CRUZ are always packed and are very fast,and have free WIFI ...they are like all PUBLIC transport here owned by the island government and very cheap ...

The trams within the city centre do not run very fast as they run through a few pedestrian only areas, then when out the city centre a lot of the tracks run on the same roads as the traffic so it's 30mph max, out in the sticks where they are on old railway lines they get a bit speed up but they wobble all over the place. Few weeks ago when the tram line opened to Manchester Airport I posted saying tram something like 45m, train 15m and a few pence cheaper. Five or so years back the tram lines through Manchester City center needed replacing, took over two years, trams couldn't run through the city centre, network was fu#ked, but so was road transport as everywhere was dug up, total shambles,,, to need a decent tram system they need to run up every street busses do,,, that ain't gonna happen in the UK, we tore them tracks up years ago, why, cos the system was inflexible, a tram is basically a train and needs a big infrastructure to make it work,,, oh plus they are noisy as fu#k, toot toot toot everywhere, wheels screech like hell on corners, and the minute ones involved in an accident the systems shut down for investigation work,,, let me tell you it ain't the future,,, ask any private company do they wanna invest......... think not.

wow seems like a report from the 19c not the 21c - TRAMS nothing like that here ,they run in the middle of the road in the central reservation on a grass area and are smooth cheap and fast .they run from a major bus station to a major bus station and the university.i have also been on the tram in barca,which is same machines and also the one in dubln,and cities in germany ,none like what you have ....we are lucky here in spain as
all the roads and infrastructure are less then 50 years old (i live in one of oldest house of anyone i know from 1953) so we dont have to live within the remains of the horse drawn age
 .santacruz is 0m and la laguna is 500m
