Well, they reckon this one will last over 100 years. The old one couldn't take all that traffic now, it wasn't designed or even anticipated that there would be such an increase in cars, lorries at 40 tons etc.

Re: New Forth replacement crossing.
But that is exactly the problem, you plan for the future, would seem they haven't even planned for today...
The new bridge has a hard shoulder, is it possible that to become a third lane, even then the merging of all the approach roads would still need sorting...
How bad a state is the old bridge, are the problems fixable,,, if so, traffic heading north four lanes on new bridge, south four lanes on old bridge,,, and sort out approach roads so they work...
Simples innit...

Re: New Forth replacement crossing.
It's got a hard shoulder because in the next few months the road is going to be classed as a motorway, M90. Old bridge will stay as A90.

Yeh, but don't know if it's happened anywhere in Scotland yet but in England to ease congestion on certain sections of motorways they are using what was the hard shoulder as a lane, they call them "Smart Mororways", there are loads of overhead gantries with signs over each lane that say if lane is open open/closed, what speed limit is in any particular lane, etc, cameras are also mounted on these gantries so operators can see what's going on and control traffic if there's an accident or breakdown, so that hard shoulder on bridge could become one of them.

Nah, it's to let them turn it into Motorway status. It's needed to allow the 70mph speeds.

Re: New Forth replacement crossing.
How do you get over the Forth if you're a tractor or learner driver when it gets made into a motorway?

Read that story, found it a bit odd, filling it with polystyrene blocks so if they need to reopen the tunnel they can be removed,,, yet article says railway cuttings have been filled in either side of tunnel, plus it's a track to nowhere...

Re: New Forth replacement crossing.
Posted this on this thread as its gonna be a lot of money spent which will not sort the problem...
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-manchester-43866570
Used this junction 19 hundreds if not thousands of times, yip, bottleneck which brings traffic to a standstill, way to sort junction, flyovers, this 50 million bridge ain't gonna sort it, traffic is still gonna have to come to a stop at traffic lights,,, Fail...
And the problem ain't this junction, it's the lack of one between the M6 and M56 a few miles up the road, that's where it needs sorting...
Just saying, but watch this space...
