The story with Eileen's sister so far ( people who know me or her on FB, don't mention anything please)
Eileen's sister got a fungal infection in her sinus 2 years ago. Steroids and drugs didn't work so they operated. she thinks the surgeon nicked the bridge of her sinus while removing the growth ( through her nose) and the thing migrated across to the other side. She started getting headaches 1st week of February this year. Back to the surgeon. He examined her ( told her to move her eyes up , down and side to side, told her that she needed to stop imagining things and go home. 2 days later, she started getting double vision in one eye. Went to optician same day. Optician said straight to hospital, there is something worrying behind the eye. The end story is, the fungus has rapidly taken over that side of her sinus, and calcified on her eye socket, enveloped the carotid artery feeding her brain and is growing on the front lobe of her brain. She had an op last Monday to "clamp" the artery to slow the blood flow, so that the major op could take place today ( this left her at a 50% risk of stroke for last 3 days). Today, she underwent an 11 hour operation to remove the growth, including sections of skull where it has calcified ( incl eye socket ) and also part of her brain where the fungus attached itself. There was a 25% risk of death, 40% chance of stroke and a 60 -70% chance if some sort of irreparable brain damage. She now is in ICU ( been in hospital more or less continuously since February 10th in Belfast. She is now in ICU and will be kept under sedation for 24 hrs. we will have to see when she wakes up how bad brain damage is.

    Not good percentage figures there...

Really take this on on board every time you post, I know Reg had very serious sinus issues and both myself and Kev have had operations, last op for me, the fourth made no improvement, I'm basically told live with it, it ain't life threatening,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, couple of months back, just finished a months course of antibiotics, that was the fourth/fifth course of antibiotics in six months, the months course has actuall fixed it out a bit, ain't taken a pain killer pill since months antibiotics, would have been downing 6/8 painkillers a day up until then...

Since Dermo brought Eilleen's sisters illness to our attention I pushed my issues further with doctor, hence month long course of antibiotics, my daughter suffers sinus issues, I've told her do not be palmed off with shit sprays etc...

My thoughts very much with you and family...

sinus troubles can escalate in to something more serious if you dont get on the case.
not saying thats what happened to my doc but ? sea salt spray keeps them healthy and clear
Sounds to me Dermot the first doc fecked up, but trying to sue the kent will drain you,

Yes very sad and all we can do is wait and see Dermo, lets hope minimal damage. They would know by now if a stroke had occurred, under sedation it is not always obvious but they do know by readings. Obviously we had long chats about this and my thoughts have been with you constantly but did not want to ask.

Hope things go well but what a terrible situation to be in from something that most of us have and seems so trivial.

she has been brought round and has spoken. Don't know any more than that, but that in itself is good news. Thanks everyone for the good wishes. I'll pass them on to Eileen.

Latest on Eileen's sister. She squeezed eileen's hand last night ( she thinks) but here is the kicker. As I mentioned before, Shiela was told that she would have a high risk on meningitis after the op but they still released her to a ward 24 hrs after the operation. She has had 2 MRI's. 5 radiologists have looked at them and none can see anything wrong. SO, they rang the top surgeon/consultant in Manchester who looked at the scans. Bear in mind, Shiela has been on life support since Monday and was warned about meningitis. The Manchester guy couldn't see anything on the scan so he said " I presume the lumbar puncture for meningitis came back negative". Shiela's team went through the files and guess what??? NOBODY DID THE MENINGITIS TEST! If she dies, there is going to be hell to pay!
